![]() | Cristopher Borden, Partner & Chief Investment Officer
Mr. Borden is Co-Founder and Director of Kobo Wealth Conservancy and Family Office. Prior to founding Kobo, Mr. Borden was the lead Tax-Exempt Bond Portfolio Manager at Bishop Street Capital Management, a subsidiary of First Hawaiian Bank. There he was responsible for portfolio management and trading of approximately $450 million in tax-exempt assets. Under Mr. Borden’s management, the Bishop Street Hawaii Municipal Bond Fund received the Lipper award for highest total return in its class for 2001, 2002, and 2004. Mr. Borden spent much of his time advising Private Banking clientele on cash management, constructing bond portfolios to minimize tax liabilities, and other investment matters. Raised in the Chicago area, Mr. Borden earned his M.B.A. in Finance at American University in Washington, D.C., and his B.A. in History from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua and later worked on classified international projects as an analyst with the Rendon Group in Washington. |
Jennifer Kobayashi-Schiel, Partner and Director of Kobo Family Office
Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel is Co-Founder and Director of Kobo Wealth Conservancy and Family Office. Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel was charged with the research and creation of a private wealth group at the First Hawaiian Bank prior to her co-founding Kobo Wealth Conservancy and Family Office LLC. Focused on serving the needs of high net worth individuals with the bank’s Wealth Management Division, Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel is well versed in the administration and management of complex estate plans, fiduciary investments and issues facing the different generations of wealth as well as the issues facing the beneficiaries of wealth. As the Director of Kobo Family Office LLC, Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel manages and assists individuals, families and non-profits faced with complex estate management, outdated business models and streamlining business plans for success. Serving as an agent to many of her clients, she ensures that our clients’ needs are met in a very confidential, seamless and professional manner. Helping them to enjoy and maintain their changing lifestyle, address their daily tasks and tedium and concentrate on and execute their entrepreneurial aspirations. A graduate of Lewis & Clark College (Hokusei University in Hokkaido, Japan), Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel earned her Juris Doctorate from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College. Ms. Kobayashi-Schiel attended the Family Office Forum in Chicago Illinois, and is a graduate of the National ABA Trust School in Evanston, Illinois. She regularly attends the Hawaii Tax Institute Conference, and is a member of the Hawaii Estate Planning Council. | |

![]() | Christopher Schmeltz, Investment Advisory Representative for Kobo Wealth Conservancy LLCAfter graduating from the University of Iowa with a BBA in Finance, Mr. Schmeltz began working with Springfield International Investments, a hedge fund in Chicago where he was responsible for funding USD $12 billion and CAD $4 billion in fixed income positions through repurchase agreements with banks. He also was responsible for hedging the firms $100-200 million open currency positions. In 1997, Mr. Schmeltz became an independent trader on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) focusing on equity and U.S. Treasury futures. In 2000, Mr. Schmeltz joined Chicago-based hedge fund Sangamon Trading where he worked with a former NY Fed economist to identify historical economic trends to monitor and forecast future outcomes. This exposure led to a greater understanding and comfort level with the markets. In 2002, Mr. Schmeltz returned to trading independently and expanded his market memberships to include the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. During his investment career, Mr. Schmeltz has traded futures, options and cash instruments including currencies, precious metals, commodities, equities and fixed income for his own account. Chris's extensive background in active market participation provides a unique perspective into how markets work on a day to day basis and the motives of the various market participants. |
